Burgers cast off their fast-food image long ago. More and more people are developing a passion for making burgers with great ingredients and the preparation process is a celebration. The burger’s biggest advantage is its simplicity: two halves of a burger bun filled with beef, chicken, fish or vegetable patties – plus a topping of salad and a savoury sauce.

American classic

Nobody really knows who first invented the burger. Although it’s an intrinsic aspect of US-American cuisine culture, the name probably came from the northern German city of Hamburg. There are many theories about how the hamburger was named. One is that a Hamburg snack bar speciality, the “Rundstück warm“, was the hamburger’s predecessor. It’s a wheat bread roll filled with a slice of roasted meat and sauce.

Pulled Pork, Pastrami or vegan

What we do know is that the hamburger shot to stardom in the USA around 100 years ago and its popularity has since spread to many other countries around the world. These days there are countless burger varieties, from classic burgers made of minced beef to pulled pork burgers, pastrami burgers and even vegetarian burgers made of linseed, beans or cereals. Creating a burger is a kind of art form. The burger is regularly reinvented as new combinations emerge and that’s probably the reason why it never goes out of fashion.

Lots of cheese and caramelised onions

Making your own burgers with friends and family is great fun. At parties you can let your guests design and season their own burgers. Some love to pile on the cheese, while others like to experiment with unconventional flavour combinations. Add peperoni for heat or caramelised onions for delicious sweetness.

The sauce is the key

There is ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise – but only sophisticated sauces made by Kikkoman really add a fine savoury taste and make burgers just perfectly juicy and spicy. The Kikkoman range includes all kinds of sauces that are awesome for burgers. Kikkoman Teriyaki BBQ Sauce with Honey adds a delicious sweet flavour. Or if you prefer a bit more zing, try Kikkoman Teriyaki Sauce with Roasted Garlic. You can use them both in the preparation process, either splash the sauce into the pan when you fry the burger or marinate the burger in it before you cook it on the barbecue. This ensures that all the flavour is absorbed and you get a juicy result.

You can also season your burger with Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce or with Teriyaki Marinade.

Did you know?

The Kikkoman Teriyaki Family includes must-have marinades and ready-to-use sauces that are ideal as dips for your meats and vegetables.
